ÓBIDOS CITY OF LITERATURE

In 2015, UNESCO designated Óbidos as a Literary City, thus integrating the Creative Cities Network. Old and abandoned spaces found from that moment a new function, which resulted in the opening of a considerable number of thematic bookstores. When, in 2013, we opened the largest Portuguese bookstore in a church, we drew attention to the new configurations between spaces and activities and between local and foreign talents. On the other hand, and with this UNESCO designation, the municipality has bet, even more assertively, on this strategy, as well as on the commitment to look at books and literature as one of the main forces of economic development. This project brought a very interesting position to Óbidos, not only for its cultural relevance, but also for the tourist differentiation.

Óbidos Literary Town plays an important role in the social cohesion of the territory, involving residents of the municipality and the western region, even extending to other neighbouring municipalities. The activities plan pays special attention to social inclusion, integration and collaboration of schools, polytechnics and universities, students, teachers and researchers. Noteworthy are the two biggest events held annually, FOLIO - International Literary Festival of Óbidos, and Latitudes – Literature and Travellers.

Óbidos Literary Town is based on a Literary Network that includes different spaces, public and private that gives body to its essence: Casa José Saramago (future Municipal Library), Livraria de Santiago, Livraria do Mercado Biológico, Livraria Artes e Letras, Literary Man Hotel, Josefa de Óbidos Bookcrossing, Silver Coast Volunteers Book Exchange, Livraria Bichinho do Conto, Livraria do Museu Municipal, Livraria da Galeria NovaOgiva, Livraria do Museu Abílio de Mattos e Silva and Livraria da Paragem.

In 2018, the Municipality of Óbidos launched the Armando da Silva Carvalho Literary Prize, which is intended to award, on an annual basis, a work of poetry, written in Portuguese and whose first edition has been published in a Portuguese speaking country. It aims to promote the dissemination of culture, our literary heritage and contribute to the defence and enrichment of the Portuguese language. Its mission is also to honour a natural poet from the municipality of Óbidos.

Óbidos also has a Literary Residency Program that allows each author to stay between two weeks and two months. The Municipality provides accommodation. The involvement of the resident author in the community is encouraged, although the main purpose of his/her stay is writing.

Available residences: Ruy Belo Literary Residence (under construction - available soon) and Josefa de Óbidos Literary Residence.
