Aqueduct

Begun in 1573, at the behest of Queen Catarina of Austria, wife of King João III, it is about 3 km long and fed two fountains, the Mãe de Água, next to the town gate (destroyed already in the 20th century) and Santa Maria Square. The Queen fully paid for its construction, receiving in exchange the floodplain, which became known as the Queen’s floodplain (Várzea da Rainha).
