The fruit
The creation of fruit-based liqueurs dates back to ancient times and places, where they were considered to be medicinal or to cure various ailments.
It is difficult to establish exactly the origin of the sour cherry. However, it is thought to come from Asia Minor, on the banks of the Caspian River, having been gradually dispersed by Mediterranean countries through trade routes.
In Portuguese Ethnography, José Leite Vasconcelos, says that Plínio, the elder (1st century AD), famous Roman writer, praises the sour cherries of Lusitania. Portugal has in the West a particular microclimate that is appropriate for growing some of the best wild cherries in Europe.
